This is such a hoot. I remember my mother driving straight to the motel after each circuit assembly, after the next date was announced to make reservations (in a dive). I was so young then. I never had to do this myself, though. Those lists were carefully guarded for the district conventions, though. Lots of talk about being fair, etc. Fair would have been to stay home, save money and not only miss the convention crap, but also a Thursday meeting, Saturday service and a Sunday meeting, and little to no chance of getting caught in your own home town!!!! Best deal on the list if you ask me. Shoshana

A couple of questions about summer conventions (spinoff)
by razorMind inbeing as i haven't been to a convention in years, i have a couple of questions:
do they still come out with that list of special-jw-rate hotels at the service meeting for the summer conventions?
also, i remember times when the list would be practically useless by the time my parents got home from that service meeting and started trying to make reservations.

Got caught throwing magazines in the trash
by unbeliever ini had to take my dad to the va hospital for a doctor's appointment and in almost every waiting room there was magazines not even recent issues.
you have to wait for freaking ever at the va hospital so i decided to do my civic duty and i went around this huge hospital collecting magazines and would throw them in the nearest trash can.
nobody cared until i got on the 4th floor.

When a JW leaves the magazine, she counts it as a placement. Meaning she voluntarily gave up title and ownership to it. For the magazine to belong to someone else, possession and title MUST be accepted by someone else. Otherwise, the magazine was abandoned, and the finder may keep it. Since you found the magazines abandoned, you are free to keep them. If that means you want to throw them out you can. This in no way infringes on freedom of speech. Abandoning magazines is not exercising freedom of speech. We all know they were left there so someone could pad their time report and not have to talk to anyone in the process (sounds like someone was AVOIDING their freedom of speech, if you ask me). Solve this problem you dumdums :)
by JH inmy nephew sent me this problem that his teacher gave him.
you have to go through each line only once and come back to the starting point.
start wherever you want but you have to come back to that starting point without missing one line.

Uh....yeah, endpoints are included in segments, so the vertices count. Two intersections in one pass. MANY solutions.... These types of problems have nothing to do with mathematics, but unconventional problem solving. The example shown is designed to lead solvers down an entirely impossible way to solve it. An earnest adolescent (that follows directions and examples) can be VERY frustrated by these types of things-particularly the ones that tend to think very traditionally. I used to give these to my students, then quickly noted how seriously they took them, and how pointless it was when one student happened upon the "trick" and then shared it with everyone else. Once shared, the students stop thinking about creative ways to figure it out. Oh well-I bet nephew's teacher didn't get it herself, but had a solution given to her. Shoshana

JW's and Pubs/Bars
by Heatmiser ini have noticed on past threads from posters from other countries than the usa that they would be hanging out in pubs and such while still jw's.
in the us i believe that going to bars would pretty much be a df/da offense.
in other countries is the policy different?

Yeah, I've heard of the boot for habitual drunkeness...poor sob-he either turned himself in, or a beloved family member aimed the shoe at his butt by turning him in. They at least gave him a chance to stop drinking, before slamming the door on him-not that I condone shunning for clearly uncontrollable problems. This situation fits in with my experience concerning bars, alcohol abuse, and heavy drinking-and JWs in Northern California. Thanks, Shoshana.

Avi-I'm talking about heavy drinking as it stands alone (or in conjunction with going to bars). Of all the cases of disfellowshipping that involved drinking, there was always some other conduct besides the drinking involved that together resulted in the disfellowshipping (like a snort of coke, or a cigarette, or a drunken driving arrest, or a roll in the hay, or disturbing the peace arrests, etc.). If possible, can you elaborate on the case/s that were simply an occurrence of heavy drinking and disfellowshipping-how did it come out, how many people were involved, where did it occur, was it habitual or a one time thing...etc. Thanks, Shoshana

Going into bars (US) is not a DF offense. In fact, a JW could be a bartender (I knew one when I was a kid). Heavy drinking never resulted in disfellowshipping, at least not without other forbidden activities involved, on top of the drinking. While frequenting bars could be frowned upon and might result in a social distancing for some, alone it wouldn't even result in "counsel." Where do you draw the line? Most big hotels (where JWs stay for conventions) have bars (heck, the rooms are equipped with "mini-bars"). Lots of restaurants have bars. Lots of bars serve food (like restaurants). Does anyone know of someone who got the boot for the sole reason of going into a bar? Shoshana. Edited to add: That picture of me was taken in a bar...Law students can't live without bars.

What does property cost where you live?
by ball. ini just saw on tv that a 3 bedroom detached property with swimming pool in florida costs the exact same as my 2 bedroom apartment on the coast in england.
i was totally suprised by this.
as there are quite a few american posters here, i am curious as to housing costs in other areas.

My very small (under 700 square feet) condo in a "very trendy" wine country town appraised last summer for over $300K (USD). The house I live in in a "not so trendy" wine country town is over 1000 square feet, with a cottage out back, in a desirable neighborhood, would sell in a week for at least $420K (USD). I get inquiries on both properties quite often. Here, real estate prices have been increasing every month for nearly eight years, at staggering rates. But most people around here consider this area to be the absolute best place on earth to live. I happen to agree. Shoshana

Home from Oaxaca
by La Capra ini had a fabulous time in oaxaca city, and on the oaxacan coast-i'm all brown and relaxed, and i now know i don't care for the moles (had a few of those made by the premier chefs of oaxaca-didn't make nasty faces, but they just don't do it for my palette).
looked at (and bought) some fabulous art, and generally stayed "medicated" as much of the time as possible.
i saw no sign of jw activity, in either place, but saw the obligatory pair of mormon boys on the coast, in their starched shirts and ties in 85 degree heat with 90 percent humidity.

All of my travel companions got mildly attacked by various intestinal discomfort, except for me (YAY!). I was downright dogmatic (some skills from being raised in a cult can be helpful) about the ice and unpeeled produce. They weren't. It's good to be home. Happy Belated Chanukah, Christmas, Shoshana's Birthday and New Year everyone. Shoshana
